Many men struggle each year trying to find that perfect gift to give their sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. Well, stop guessing and spring for a romantic getaway!

The second annual pleasure index study by Expedia.com revealed 94 percent of Americans would give up prized possessions for a full week to gain just one more vacation day.

“The Expedia Pleasure Index study brings some rigor to the notion that most of us intuitively understand: vacations are the fastest path to happiness,” said Sarah Gavin, Expedia Travel Expert, Expedia.com.

It’s because 82 percent of survey respondents said they get more pleasure out of vacations than possessions, and 80 percent reported vacations make than happier than weddings, religion, cats and birthdays.

“People appreciate themselves and their loved ones more on holiday. Nine out of 10 Americans believe their happiest memories were formed on vacation. Expedia is releasing this study in the dead of winter to remind Americans that happiness – a sunny beach, a mountain chalet or just an afternoon at a cafe with friends – is only a few clicks away,” said Gavin.

So what were people willing to give up for an extra vacation day:

  • 50 percent would go a week without chocolate.
  • 42 percent would go without television.
  • 41 percent would go without coffee.
  • 35 percent would not touch their mobile phone/smartphone.
  • 35 percent of Americans would avoid their best friend.
  • 30 percent would go without sex (35 percent of women would do so, versus 25 percent of men).

However, it seems many people view vacations as a guilty pleasure. Researchers found 32 percent of Americans have never taken a holiday longer than seven days, while 71 percent of Americans have never taken one more than 14 days long.

But get this, 85 percent report feeling that they “need a vacation right now.”

Other revelations that came out of this year’s survey:

  • 80 percent declared that vacations make them “very” happy.
  • 96 percent believe that vacations make them feel better both mentally and physically.
  • 93 percent report being at least “somewhat likely” to be intimate on vacation.
  • 48 percent say they are “more likely” to be intimate with their spouse or partner on holiday than at home.

Overall, researchers concluded Americans who take vacations three or more times per year report higher satisfaction with their relationships.

This year, 2,000 Americans were surveyed for the 2014 Expedia Pleasure Index.
